The city of Santarém was conquered by D. Afonso Henriques, first king of Portugal, on March 15, 1147 and has been the district headquarters since 1837. Currently the municipality has 11 parishes, an area of 544.84 km2 and approximately 59,000 inhabitants. Due to its important architectural heritage, it is designated s the “Gothic Capital”.
The economic indicators of the municipality of Santarém reveal clearly positive developments. The most recent data shows growth in the creation of companies and jobs. In 2023, exports grew by 16.02%.

Polytechnic University
IP Santarém was created on December 26, 1979, by Decree-Law 513-T/79, having integrated the Agrarian Super School and the Superior School of Education. At the end of 1985, the Santarém’s Superior School of Management was created, by Government Decree No. 46/85, of 22 November.
In 1986, the Tomar’s superior school of Technology was integrated into the Polytechnic Institute of Santarém, which, in 1997, would give rise to the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar. In 1997, the Superior School of Sports of Rio Maior was created, by Decree-Law No. 352/97, of December 5th.
In 2001, the Santarém’s Superior School of Nursing was integrated and, in 2008, it was renamed Superior School of Health, by Order No. 14812/2009, of July 1, 2009.
